KS3 Interim Reports - What Does it all Mean?
Your child’s Interim Reports – that you receive three times each year – contain key information about their progress and achievement.
All KS3 reports contain a grade for Attitude to Learning (A2L) in each subject.
This is graded using the following criteria:
- 1: Excellent
- 2: Very Good
- 3: Satisfactory
- 4: Requires Improvement
- 5: Very Poor
You are also informed in this column if, in any of their subjects, there is a persistent Homework concern (with the letter ‘H’) or a serious classroom behaviour concern (with the letter ‘B’).
Attainment is reported differently in Y7, compared to Y8 and Y9.
In Y7, we use a holistic approach where, for each subject – based on the knowledge and skills they have secured – students are at one of three stages:
- Working above their expected level
- Working at their expected level
- Working towards their expected level.
Then, in Y8 and Y9, we use the GCSE grading system because it allows us to track a student’s progress towards their crucial exams at the end of Y11, so the grades will be on the 9-1 scale.
Grades 9/8/7 are the top grades; grade 5 is a ‘good pass’, and grade 4 is a ‘standard pass’.
However, grades will be relatively low at KS3, with most students achieving somewhere between a grade 1 and a grade 5. This is normal and reflects where students will be at the moment.
The main thing to look out for is whether your child is making progress from one report to the other. And, of course, please spend time discussing your child’s education with them, especially after each report, as this can have a significant impact on their learning.
